NIPCO Plc’s Commitment To Gas Sector Flows From The Federal Government’s Call To Promote The Gas Sector In Nigeria Which Is Gifted With Abundant Indigenous Supply
Notwithstanding the success in the oil terminal division, NIPCO took the pioneering step to promote Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly called cooking gas across the nation. With the consent of the Federal Government, NIPCO opted to build a major private ultramodern terminal for storage and distribution of LPG. In 2007, NIPCO began the construction of a state of the art LPG plant at its sprawling Dockyard Road terminal and commissioned the LPG terminal in January 2009.
Existing LPG storage facilities stands at 4,500 Metric Tons capable to store up to 60% Propane ratings. Receipt and Dispatch facilities are also synchronized and monitored through same Central Control Room (CCR). Distribution is facilitated through 3 Nos. of fully automated loading gantry with a capacity to load 1,000 Metric Ton per day. The fire fighting facilities are also synchronized with central fire pump house.
NIPCO ranks among the biggest LPG storage facilities in Nigeria and undoubtedly contributes to the increasing domestic consumption of LPG, through a plethora of promotional activities. The LPG market is currently booming with a consumption of 400,000 Metric Tons as compared to 100,000 Metric Ton 3 years ago. NIPCO entered into various agreements with throughput customers, bottling plants and dealers to distribute LPG to the nook and crannies of Nigeria. NIPCO has come out with various strategies by itself to commission skids at various locations for easy access to consumers.
Also, it has a transport fleet of 40 LPG bulk tankers to transport LPG throughout Nigeria, a feat uncommon among its peers. Considering the growing demand in domestic market NIPCO has quickly identified the need for additional storage and has obtained all necessary statutory approval and have commenced construction activities for a 5,000 Metric Ton of LPG Sphere storage which is expected to be commissioned by end 2016.
Since Nigeria produces about 4.0 Million Metric Tons per annum NIPCO is in constant touch with Federal Government to emphasize the need for more usage on LPG on the below categories.
Auto LPG – This can provide an alternate solution for increasing demand on gasoline and provide stable supply to the consumers since LPG is locally available. Also it will reduce the Forex burden on the Federal Government since Gasoline is a imported commodity.
NMCG– NIPCO Metal Cutting Gas
NIPCO is currently promoting NMCG which is basically LPG mixed with a special additive. This metal cutting gas is a good market replacement for acetylene gas as NMCG is cost effective.
